So, there’s a whole bunch of stuff to pack. I am not quite used to travelling for such a long time unless I am backpacking, in which case I travel with a minimum anyway. So there we go: A massive suitcase, and yet I haven’t managed to fit all my stuff in. I am really looking forward to going to Venice and all the people seem amazing. I am not quite sure how well I will treat this blog as we won’t have much internet connectivity – apparently. We’ll see.
For the rest I am completely equipped with clothes for formal, semi-formal and informal occasions as well as some other stuff you’ll need when you’re in Italy for two weeks. Speaking of which: I have always had very mixed feelings about Italy, and it was never one of my prime travel destinations. Hence the title: I am trying to finally come to peace with this nevertheless beautiful country.
I’ll depart from Luxembourg Airport tomorrow at 10:40 and I will arrive in Venice at 13:25 via Frankfurt. Let’s see…

So, this is not quite a week before I am leaving for Venice. I am still waiting for my tickets and further instructions on what we are supposed to do when, but I am sure that the guys organising our stay are doing just fine.
Of course I am flattered by the press releases about me and the jury in general. Yet I am never sure if I am the right person for this job, and if the whole fuss is really based upon something. Anyway, I am so happy to be part of this, and I am looking forward to doing this, and of course I am excited also about the programme.

I am still unsure if I want to read more about the films in advance or if I want to leave it to a true impressionist experience in the way of watching the films without any prejudice. Anyway, that’s 20 films for 10 days, which makes a straight average of two films a day. From my experience at EIFF, I get very tired during the fourth daily film, so two a day should be fine. However, looking at the official selection, these are the films from Venezia 67 I’d like to see:
Black Swan – Darren Aronofsky is, apart from Sofia Coppola, one of my favourite directors. And well, then there’s the main actress … and then, a thriller about ballet dance, I mean, how cool can a film be?
Somewhere – Did I mention that I worship Sofia Coppola? Especially Coppola’s choice of imagery is impressing, and the choice of Harris Savides as DOP is just amazing.
Promises written in water – I have no idea what to expect, but Vincent Gallo sounds great, right?
Miral – Again, no idea. But Julian Schnabel is very promising. It might get confusing.
Drei – Tom Tykwer, after the International (yes, really), True (the short film with Natalie Portman) and Run Lola Run, there’s no doubt: noone can film better running-shots than Tykwer. And Frank Griebe, DOP, did a Rammstein clip as well as several Tykwer movies. And they all looked great. So there we go.
All in all, exciting and interesting times ahead. Looking forward to doing it.
